Volunteer groups play an important role in supporting our educators, our students, our programming, and our mission. During a team workday, groups of 5-15 people will help to maintain and beautify the garden sites with the support of the CommunityGrows team. Groups will take part in a teambuilding activity, learn more about our programs and history, and spend some time outdoors doing hands-on work in the garden!
Fill out the group volunteer interest form if your group would like to volunteer with us.
We have garden sites in the Western Addition, Fillmore, and the Outer Mission.
We offer teambuilding workdays Monday-Friday, dependent on our educator’s class schedules. (see Volunteer Intake Form for more information).
We typically do some weeding, harvesting, planting, pruning, trellis building, etc. These garden projects range from low to moderate labor intensity. There are usually a range of projects to choose from on a given workday, so there is something for everyone to enjoy!
We tend to hold workdays with at least 5 participants, and can accommodate up to 15 participants on a given workday.
To better support our staff, programming, and organizational needs, we ask that groups coming to the garden make a tax deductible monetary donation. This donation helps cover the staff and supplies costs associated with running a workday and contributes to the overall costs of running our programs. Your support allows us to continue providing free programming to youth in the gardens and kitchens, and supports our staff and teens as they work to maintain and grow these wonderful outdoor spaces!
Please contact our Community Engagement Coordinator, Brittney Barron at barron.b@communitygrows.org to set up a private group or corporate work day!
“We organized a company volunteer event with this organization and had such a blast! I think I can speak for all of the attendees that day in saying that it was a fun and rewarding experience. We got to learn about the history of the organization and the areas they serve in the Western Addition on top of getting to make visible improvements at Buchanan Mall. We got a first hand experience of what this organization does every day, and I will say it is fantastic.”

“Community Grows work ethic and investment is all in their name - they grow the community with the community. I love their rigor, their humor, and their humanity. I had the esteemed privilege of leading a volunteer project revamping the gardens in Spring of 2019 and was humbled by the team of teachers, educators, and staff members who thoughtfully approached the impact of our work on their work. I find them to be a shining light in the city.”

“We've been volunteering with CommunityGrows for the last several years as part of our corporate volunteer day. The team there has been very easy to work with, friendly and passionate about their cause and it's been great fun to volunteer. We enjoyed learning about the different plants and gardening, something which is difficult to do in the midst of a big city and sitting in front of a computer all day long.”
