On Thursday, June 12, 2014, CommunityGrows took two groups of youth from Booker T. Washington Community Service Center and Up-on-Top Summer Program to Green Gulch Farm. It was a day out of the City to enjoy the fresh air, see the gardens and get some exercise. After a winding road up Highway 1 and down to Green Gulch, near Muir Beach in Marin County, everyone was relieved to touch down on and walk through the Eucalyptus Grove out to the gardens.
On the way, they got to witness a rare treat of a docile swarm of bees that had alighted themselves on a bush near the parking lot. The Green Gulch docent crew vigilantly impress upon the youth to stay calm and observe this wonder. It worked and they all got to witness an event rarely met with.
Then on to the garden to taste the flowers, put their hands into the dirt, check out the compost piles, and eat honey on sorrel leaves.
Thank you to the great Green Gulch Farm docents, Sukey Parmelee, Dahlia Kamesar, Doug, Audrey and Dianna.
After lunch everyone got to walk through the fields down to Muir Beach and hang out at the ocean. A beautiful day had by all!
