Summer Salsa and Kale Chips-Um Mmm

7.22.14-BEETS-Salsa_IMG_7680On Tuesday, July 22, 2014 the BEETS (Band of Environmentally Educated and Employable Teens) spent the afternoon in the Hayes Valley Apartments’ Community Room preparing salsa and kale chips. Yet another cooking event that was so easy to do and so healthy. For the kale chips, everyone de-stemmed and rendered the kale into bite-size pieces. Then a slight sprinkling of olive oil and salt was applied, tossing to coat, and laying out on a baking sheet. Cook for 10 minutes in a 350 oven, and the kale was ready to devour. Delicious!

Then a salsa cook-off ensued with BEETS breaking into teams and learning about heirloom tomatoes, and other fruits from Melissa Tang, BEETS Program Manager, with the assistance of Melanie Chan, our great summer intern. The contest was to come up with the most original, most innovative and most fruity entry. Everyone got to try out and vote on others’ submissions. A great team building, educational and delicious afternoon.
